Guanyin and the Buddha

Guanyin is the bodhisattva associated with compassion; the Buddha needs no introduction. Both are among the most common subjects in jadeite carving, and both are traditionally given rather than bought for oneself.

A pendant is worn against the skin. That is why the back of the carving is finished as carefully as the front.

Because the figure is worn facing outward, the reverse of a well-made pendant is polished smooth — an easy detail to check when comparing two pieces at similar prices.
